Background of the study
In Calabar, the media landscape has increasingly been influenced by deliberate policy measures aimed at standardizing the use of the Efik language across various platforms. This effort is driven by the need to preserve cultural heritage and ensure that media representations remain authentic in the face of globalization. Policy initiatives have sought to harmonize linguistic practices in broadcast, print, and digital media, thereby reducing dialectal variations and inconsistencies (Ekong, 2023). Regulatory frameworks, funding incentives, and training programs have been introduced to support media organizations in adopting these standards (Obot, 2024). Such measures are crucial not only for enhancing the clarity and consistency of Efik language output but also for reinforcing community identity and pride. Over time, these policies have evolved in response to both technological advancements and sociocultural demands, creating a dynamic environment in which traditional language forms are continually reinterpreted. Nonetheless, the integration of modern communication practices with longstanding cultural norms presents inherent challenges. This study examines the historical evolution and current status of policy measures, assesses their impact on media practices, and considers the role of government agencies and regulatory bodies in ensuring compliance. By drawing on policy documents, media analyses, and stakeholder interviews, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors that promote or hinder the effective standardization of Efik language media in Calabar (Ima, 2023; Nse, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite comprehensive policy measures aimed at standardizing Efik language media, significant challenges persist in Calabar. Inconsistencies in guideline enforcement, resource limitations, and the rapid evolution of digital media contribute to variations in language use (Ekong, 2023). Media outlets frequently encounter difficulties in reconciling traditional language norms with contemporary demands, resulting in fragmented representations that can dilute cultural authenticity. Additionally, sporadic monitoring and the absence of uniform training for media practitioners further exacerbate these discrepancies (Obot, 2024). The gap between policy formulation and practical implementation calls for a critical investigation into the barriers that impede effective standardization. This study seeks to identify these obstacles and propose strategic interventions to enhance policy compliance, ensuring that the Efik language remains consistent and culturally resonant across all media platforms (Ima, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate current policy measures for Efik language media standardization.
  2. To identify challenges in the implementation of these policies.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving policy compliance in media.

Research questions:

  1. What are the current policy measures for Efik language media standardization in Calabar?
  2. What challenges hinder the effective implementation of these policies?
  3. How can policy measures be enhanced to achieve greater standardization?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive examination of the policy measures for Efik language media standardization in Calabar, contributing to the broader discourse on indigenous language preservation. The findings will inform policymakers, media regulators, and cultural organizations about practical challenges and opportunities inherent in current initiatives. By addressing gaps between policy and practice, the research offers valuable insights for improving media standardization, which in turn supports cultural identity and linguistic integrity (Ekong, 2023; Obot, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the examination of policy measures for Efik language media standardization in Calabar. It focuses solely on media practices within Calabar and does not extend to other regions or informal media practices.

Definitions of terms:

  • Policy measures: Official guidelines and actions designed to regulate and standardize language use in media.
  • Standardization: The process of establishing uniform linguistic norms.
  • Media: Various platforms including broadcast, print, and digital channels used for communication.
